Trump's System of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's insatiable desire for retribution has swiftly morphed into a organized framework. During the year since his election, the leader's anger and whims have adopted the form of administrative measures in ways reminiscent to past repressive systems. Government figures who resist his demands are summarily removed and succeeded by supporters. Critical officials who challenge him encounter legal action, trial and punishment. Adversaries have been designated under presidential directives as “hostile to national interests”, “opposed to religious values” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with prosecution as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Remade

Every case involving legal action of critics and leniency for his allies displays its own distinct features. However, notwithstanding their specific nature, they exemplify examples of what has developed as a systematic approach. These incidents are anything but random. Trump's removal of Department of Justice prosecutors and law enforcement personnel, accompanied by his installation of loyalists in high-level positions, began quickly, promptly developed a consistency, and has now been formed into a system. Federal prosecutors and the law enforcement agency have been remade into political agencies under his direct orders to implement his directives. Wrongdoing has been turned into normal. This is the system of punishment.

Administration is focused with penalizing the chief's perceived adversaries than they are with protecting our country's safety.

Internal the System

The origin of this system has been exposed in the court filing of three former senior Federal Bureau executives lodged in late summer in the US district court in DC against agency head Kash Patel and top lawyer Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a initiative of revenge against them for what administration figures considered to be a failure to show proper political loyalty”. According to the filing that a former acting director, the previous temporary head, describes a discussion in which the director “freely acknowledged the illegality of his conduct”.

He had tried to protect FBI agents from being fired, the lawsuit claims. The director advised him that “White House figures” – perceived by the official to be the presidential administration and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to fire all those who they identified as having worked on a law enforcement case against the president. The document adds: “Patel explained that he had to terminate the personnel his superiors told him to fire, because his capacity to hold his own job depended on the removal of the agents who worked on investigations involving the chief executive. The director explained that there was nothing he or the official could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI sought to put the President in prison and he hasn't forgotten it.’” Once he informed him he was violating the FBI's own policies, the director reportedly said “he recognized that and he was aware the essence of the summary firings were probably unlawful”.

Broad Effects

Since his reported acknowledgment to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau have been dismantled and redirected for his retribution system. Multiple of the bureau's high-ranking agents were fired or pushed out in the initial period of the government. About 4,500 professional attorneys at the department have taken a “voluntary departure plan”. No fewer than seven federal prosecutors, among them those in the southern district of New York, quit in protest over what they regarded as political interference in abandoning the corruption case against the city leader, a political figure, in as a trade for his collaboration with the administration's ICE roundups of immigrants. The ethics division of DoJ, which handles ethical violations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The equality section has been devastated: seventy percent of its personnel has departed. One-third of senior leaders at the justice department have quit. The division upholding environmental law has lost 50% its leadership.

Rewards and Sanctions

In the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the federal division, she, stepped down in objection against what she characterized as the “trade-off”. The border official, his “border czar,” appeared as the enforcer with the mayor on a media outlet to announce: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in NYC.”. And, another figure, formerly the senior DoJ official and a ex-lawyer, who arranged the deal, was granted an court role, a potential springboard to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for offenses committed while in power, granted by the unprecedented decision of the Republican majority on the supreme court, thus thwarting his legal action over the Capitol riot and safeguarding his public standing for the presidential race, is the basis on which he depends to defend his stalwarts. Under these circumstances, he has been empowered to permit wrongdoing. The consequence of the supreme court decision saturates his presidency and the Republican Party thoroughly. The court matter has escalated. In the words of the former president's administration lawyer the figure said about the Watergate
